- We old-time users of Norton Commander have grown accustomed to several of its
- great features. I am sure that others like I have tried Windows 3.1 and its
- File Manager and have found it very nice except for a few nicities NC has but
- File Manager doesn't -- in particular, NC's interaction with the DOS prompt is
- carries at the bottom it its dual list of directories. Although one can run
- a DOS command line constantly in Windows 3.1, File Manager doesn't interact
- with it the way NC does. For example,
-
- (1) In NC, the current directory for the DOS prompt is always set to whichever
- of the two listed directories contains the highlighted file selection bar.
- Thus, if a DOS command line is entered at the DOS prompt, the command is
- executed in the directory of the selected file.
-
- (2) In NC, one can compose a DOS command line at the prompt by copying one,
- two, three, or any number of file names from the directory listing (using
- CTRL-Enter). I can't see how to use drag-and-drop to accomplish this with
- Windows 3.1 File Manager and DOS prompt.
-
- Does anyone know of software for Windows 3.1 that makes File Manager work with
- a DOS prompt in these ways? Are there shareware solutions? Or is the answer
- Norton Desktop for Windows? (Of course, these are the kinds of things one
- would like to try out before blowing a hundred bucks or so and finding no such
- features.)
