- Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth. I've just gone thru installing WP
- Office 3.1 under SCO Xenix. I think the product provides some execellent
- functionality. However, there are some distinct negative points as well.
-
- The documentation frequently has incorrect examples. For instance, the F13
- key on the console.
-
- The office functions are supported well - mail, scheduler, calendar, etc.
-
- The cross-platform support isn't quite as good. Mine was a fairly simple
- application. We only wanted to connect several DOS laptops to the host
- Xenix system. I can count on the joints of one finger the number of WP
- people who are knowledgeable in that scenario. That in itself isn't all
- that bad. What is bad is the number of people who cheerfully provided
- wrong answers, even though they didn't even bother to understand what it
- was I was trying to do.
-
- The 'async' server (for modems or direct connections) functions, but has
- a flaw or two. One example is that if you do an stty -a on the port you
- are using, you find that MIN = 0 and TIME = 0. This means they are
- endlessly reading the port, which translates into a large amount of wasted
- cpu cycles! WP says that SCO claims its device driver for the standard
- serial port doesn't work, and you MUST have the modem (connection) on a
- supported third-party board. The real problem (as I see it) is WP's
- approach. If they'd ever have bothered to take a look at how the real
- world does this sort of thing - cu, uucico, TERM, Blast, etc. - they just
- might have discovered a better way.
-
- I could also mention some of the less than intuitive things one has to do
- to setup the product. An example: your local host needs to be defined as
- a TCP/IP connection, even if you don't have or use TCP/IP.
