- Ultrix's man (as well as many other programs) are very old, and you
- will be much happier if you replace them with free versions that work
- better.
-
- The program we use is called "man-1.1", written by jwe@che.utexas.edu.
- You can ftp it from ward.che.utexas.edu:/pub/unix/man-1.1.tar.Z. It's
- copylefted, so you can use it with no problems.
-
- It works great under Ultrix - I think it was written with Ultrix in
- mind. It supports MANPATH and lots of other nifty features.
-
- In fact, you'll probably end up not needing to set MANPATH at all. It
- supports a PATH->MANPATH automatic mapping feature. It's set up here
- so that if you have /local/bin/gnu in your PATH, then man will
- automatically know to look in /local/man/gnu for man pages, etc etc.
-
- It's really great software. The only problem I've had with it was that
- the makewhatis script didn't do too well with Ultrix man pages. If you
- have similar problems, send me mail and I can send you a hacked
- version that I had better luck with.
