- This is a question which I have a particular interest in as we are
- about to start networking here and my personal feeling is that the
- idea of a 'stand alone' file server a la Novell is a waste of time
- especially in your case where your PCs are going to be running UNIX.
- If a Unix box with NFS can supply file server capabilities then why
- bother with Novell ? Even Novell seem to have recognized this fact
- as they are busy working on Univel which, as far as I can make out,
- will provide the same functionality as a UNIX box with NFS.
-
- I agree with Neil's opinion.
- Here is another *big* fact against Novell-Nets and for Unix file
- servers via ethernet:
-
- What do you do, if you want to program a statistic over all your one
- million articles ? You cannot transfer one million records over the
- net, to compute some statistics on your DOS-PC or Unix-workstation.
- And you cannot write programs on a Novell-Server.
-
- If you have a Unix fileserver, you can run your statistic program
- directly on the fileserver, only the output from your statistic has to
- go through the net.
-
- Forget DOS/Novell environments if you want to make professional
- applications.
