  26. MoOLIT is not the Motif API.  Applications compiled with it, though,
  27. can have the display look either OL or Motif style, as the user
  28. prefers.  It is immediately obvious using this feature, how much
  29. better looking OL is over Motif.  However, most off-the-shelf
  30. applications are Motif, and you are stuck with the Motif look
  31. with those.

  33. Unfortunately, the obvious extension -- provide the Motif API with
  34. the selectable display feature -- isn't in Destiny.  So, I fear,
  35. we'll be stuck with Motif apps for a very long time to come.

  37. Destiny itself doesn't include Motif libraries, but one likely
  38. successful commercial packaging of it -- Univel's UnixWare -- does
  39. (in addition to MoOLIT).

  41. What the would really needs is the Windows NT API, with switchable
  42. OL, Motif, and Windows Look-N-Feel (I don't have the slightest
  43. idea if this is technically feasable).  Microsoft, in its comfortable
  44. monopoly position, doesn't have to argue about which is better.
  45. It'll simply have the lions share of GUI applications to point to.
  46. Now if all those apps could be compiled for UNIX with only a
  47. couple tweaks, we could get back to evaluating OSes based on
  48. technical merit, instead of marketing finesse and whiz-bang
  49. solitaire programs.
