- Hello, all. I was wondering if I could get a few opinions from anyone with
- any information. I am going to buy myself a computer in september, and I am
- going to get a unix operating system for it. However, I need some help in
- deciding on brands. I'll tell you what I've decided so far:
-
- I am buying a 486 PC of some sort, so I can still run some
- MS-DOS programs I like (games such as Ultima)
-
- I want at least 6gigabytes of disk space
-
- I want to be able to run openwindows
-
- I have quite a bit of experience in using unix on a Sun SPARCstation IPC, so
- I know a lot about what unix does, but not so much about how it does it
- (however, I do know some of how it works).
-
- Anyway, what I would like is some opinions on:
-
- 1) What type of PC would be good?
- 2) What brand of unix is good?
- 3) How should I partition my drive(s)?
- 4) How many drives should I spread my 6gig across for good response?
- 5) How much memory should I have?
- 6) What types of monitors are good?
- 7) What kind of drives are good?
- 8) What kind of ROM BIOS for my MS-DOS partition is good?
- 9) What kind of power supply protection should I have?
- 10) Anything relevant to purchasing and setting up a unix system which I
- have neglected to ask above, which is probably quite a bit.
-
- Keep in mind that I want at least one DOS partition on my drives, and that I
- will still be running DOS applications every once in a while.
-
- Please give me an explanation of your answers, not just a "You should buy this,
- that and the other." I would prefer "You should buy this, that and the other,
- BECAUSE..." Also, please tell me what kind of hardware, software and warranty
- support your choices have (including upgrading support).
-
- Please e-mail me with responses, since I do not intend to read this newsgroup
- often (there are far too many articles, most of which I have no interest in
- or no idea about). I can post a summary of results, if the majority of people
- would like me to.
-
- Any help is appreciated.
