  11. A booting success and a failure (tried three different boot diskettes
  12. on two different systems, all worked on one, none worked on the other).

  14. Diskettes used:
  15.    dist.fs (Jollitz .1.24), dist.fs, (cgd) fixit.fs (cgd)

  17. Symptoms: 
  18.    Copyright notice appears, disk access light stays on, cursor blinks,
  19.    nothing else ever happens. I think I have seen a similar problem on
  20.    this group but not the solution. Tried all three diskettes, disabled or
  21.    disconnected all optional hardware, disabled various CMOS settings.
  22.    All three diskettes had exact same problem.

  24. Failed to boot on:
  25.    486/33mhz OPTI-486WB with 8MB RAM
  26.    OPTI chipset, AMI BIOS (6/6/91)
  27.    "Groundhog Graphics" ET4000 SVGA card
  28.    Quantum 234mb IDE drive
  29.    1.2mb and 1.44mb drives (1.2mb is boot)
  30.    All serial and parallel cards removed after initial failure
  31.    All "shadow" options disabled in CMOS after initial failure
  32.    All caches disabled in CMOS after initial failure
  33.    Speed reduced to "16mhz" after additional failures
  34.  
  35. Same diskettes booted just fine on:
  36.    386/25mhz no-name board with 4mb RAM (so Taiwanese the "manual" is
  37.       in Chinese...)
  38.    OPTI chipset, AMI BIOS (ca. 1989)
  39.    "Tronics" ET3000 
  40.    Adaptec 1542B SCSI adapter
  41.    Quantum 120mb SCSI drive 
  42.    generic 2serial/1parallel card
  43.  
  44. Any ideas on this mysterious failure would be greatly appreciated. When
  45. the larger hard drive arrives, I can start hacking but until then...
