- Disk Manager is a commercial product (MSDOS-based, at least). A data
- recovery service claims that Disk Manager is the major cause of disk
- crashes that they see. Evidently it has something to do with Disk
- Manager lifting the write heads during low-level format of MFM/RLL
- drives. This makes a disk vulnerable to small alignment changes.
-
- If you only use Disk Manager to partition your disk, then this
- shouldn't be a problem. A similar utility which evidently is less
- harmful is SpeedStor. This is also a commercial MSDOS product. On the
- other hand, if all you want to do is partition your disk, DOS fdisk or
- even public domain utilities (see Linux archives, for instance) are
- probably your best bet.
