  11. Pax, a public domain program, can read tar and cpio archives all the way back
  12. to version 7 tar, and can write IEEE Std 103.1 tar and cpio archives, both
  13. of which are, in fact, byte-sex independent, plus cpio can archive /dev and
  14. friends.

  16. It has tar and cpio command line interfaces, as well as a pax command line,
  17. which has more control and can read and write tar and cpio archives from
  18. the same command-line interface.

  20. It was funded by Usenix, and can be found about anywhere on the net.
  21. It's also /usr/5bin/pax on your Sun, /usr/bin/pax under SCO.

  23. It was supposed to bring peace to the tar and cpio camps, but that would cut
  24. down too much on the flaming. :)
