- The product is called RS/36, from Universal Software (714 851-8021). It
- is a very complete S/36 runtime environment (all OCL, procedure commands,
- help text, etc), *plus* a machine code emulator that can directly execute
- S/36 object code (binaries). It even executes IBM's RPG compiler! Thus you
- can continue to maintain your programs exactly as you did on the S/36 until
- you've worked out a future developement strategy. Currently RS/36 runs RPG
- and COBOL programs, their respective compilers, and is binary-compatible
- with ASNA's 400RPG and BPS's RPG II 1/2.
-
- What's astounding is that on an RS/6000 320 this thing is two to four times
- faster than a real S/36 -- even though RS/36 is *emulating* S36 machine
- instructions! I was, and continue to be, impressed by this product.
-
- I worked with Roger Pence on a product review of RS/36 for NEWS 3X/400 Magazine.
- If you want a copy of the review, let me know. (It was in an early 1991
- issue).
