  19. Ever heard of IRC--Internet Relay Chat?  It's an international,
  20. multi-channel chat system that runs over the internet.  If I remember
  21. rightly, it's been around since 1988, and has grown at a phenominal rate
  22. ever since.  During the slowest hours in the wee of the morning, you can
  23. usually find 300-400 people online.  During peak hours I've seen over
  24. 800.

  26. It's a two part system.  You would run a client on the machine that
  27. people would use to connect to the net.  Clients are currently available
  28. for any flavor of unix, CMS, VMS, and Emacs.  There are also some in
  29. development for direct use from net-connected PC's and Macs.  The client
  30. program would then connect to an IRC server close to you on the net.
  31. You may not know this, but you already have an IRC server at rpi.edu.
  32. Which means you've probably have an IRC client floating around somewhere
  33. too.  The name of your IRC server is netserv2.its.rpi.edu.
