- Ever heard of IRC--Internet Relay Chat? It's an international,
- multi-channel chat system that runs over the internet. If I remember
- rightly, it's been around since 1988, and has grown at a phenominal rate
- ever since. During the slowest hours in the wee of the morning, you can
- usually find 300-400 people online. During peak hours I've seen over
- 800.
-
- It's a two part system. You would run a client on the machine that
- people would use to connect to the net. Clients are currently available
- for any flavor of unix, CMS, VMS, and Emacs. There are also some in
- development for direct use from net-connected PC's and Macs. The client
- program would then connect to an IRC server close to you on the net.
- You may not know this, but you already have an IRC server at rpi.edu.
- Which means you've probably have an IRC client floating around somewhere
- too. The name of your IRC server is netserv2.its.rpi.edu.
-
- Give it a try. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask me, or
- the admin of your IRC server. They can be reached at irc@rpi.edu.
