  12. Is there any way to find the width of a bit of text in TeX?  I'd like
  13. a command, say \widthof, that would work like this:

  15. \newdimen\textwidth
  16. \textwidth=\widthof{some text}
  17.  
  18. From then on, I could use \textwidth to be the width of the string
  19. "some text".
