  22. Zenith Data Systems' version of Microsoft Windows versions 3.1 is now 
  23. available.  Microsoft Windows version 3.1 will make ZDS computers even 
  24. easier for our customers to use.  The latest ZDS version of MS-DOS 5.0 
  25. is available, too.
  26.  
  27. Microsoft Windows version 3.1 incorporates significant enhancements over 
  28. earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, including improved installation, 
  29. enhanced disk performance, better LAN connectivity, new scalable fonts, 
  30. special portable computer support, useful data-links between applications, 
  31. smoother error trapping, and multimedia extensions.

  33. Microsoft Windows version 3.1 works best with MS-DOS version 5.0.  MS-DOS 
  34. version 5.0 incorporates enhancements, too.  An Advanced Power Management 
  35. (APM) utility takes power management on battery-run computers up to the 
  36. level of software.  This change makes APM available to software applications.
  37. In addition, the new file transfer utility allows two computers to hook 
  38. up via a serial link and to run as a client and a server.  Finally, the 
  39. bulky MS-DOS manual has been replaced with a concise guide to the operating 
  40. system.  The new format makes it easier to find more complete information.

  42. An upgrade program is available so that those end-users of ZDS products 
  43. can purchase upgrades to Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and/or MS-DOS 
  44. version 5.0 from ZDS.  A special purchase price is available to those 
  45. who elect to upgrade both packages at once.  An upgrade form that details 
  46. this plan will be mailed to selected ZDS customers.  The customers who 
  47. will receive mailers fall into two categories.  The first category is 
  48. comprised of all currently registered Microsoft Windows licensees.  The 
  49. second category is comprised of customers who have registered a computer 
  50. from the list of computers which are currently supported on Microsoft 
  51. Windows version 3.1.  The special upgrade price for those who combine an 
  52. upgrade to Microsoft Windows version 3.1 with an upgrade to MS-DOS version 
  53. 5.0 is only available directly through ZDS.  The combined upgrade has a 
  54. special price of $89.99, and it is available by returning the special 
  55. upgrade notice that is being sent directly to previously registered users.

  96. A new facet of this program is the ability for resellers to sell ZDS 
  97. upgrades of MS-DOS version 5.0 and Microsoft Windows version 3.1 to 
  98. end-users who have ZDS' equipment.  Before selling a copy of an upgrade 
  99. from ZDS, the reseller is required to validate proof of prior purchase of 
  100. ZDS equipment.  This proof of prior purchase must be in the form of an 
  101. earlier license agreement of each software package that is being upgraded, 
  102. a photocopy of Disk 1 for that software, a serial number of a ZDS computer, 
  103. or the copyright page of the manual for the software that is being upgraded.
  104. Without a proof of prior purchase, a transaction between the reseller and 
  105. the end-user to upgrade to the ZDS' version of MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows 
  106. is illegal.
  107.  
  108. In response to numerous customer requests, ZDS is also offering a site 
  109. licensing program for those who wish to purchase ten or more copies of 
  110. one of the following: new copies of Microsoft Windows version 3.1, upgrade 
  111. copies of Microsoft Windows version 3.1, or upgrade copies of MS-DOS 
  112. version 5.0.  The customer will be sent one copy of the selected software 
  113. package, which includes one set of disks and one set of manuals, as well 
  114. as a site license agreement that indicates how many times the software 
  115. could be duplicated throughout the customer's organization.  Details on 
  116. this program will be available in another bulletin.

  118. ZDS engineers have completed extensive testing of Microsoft Windows version 
  119. 3.1 on selected ZDS machines.  A few of the computers have special 
  120. requirements that must be met prior to installing and executing Microsoft 
  121. Windows version 3.1.  The ZDS Customer Assistance Center (CAC) has a 
  122. fully updated list of these special requirements.  Customers can call the 
  123. CAC at 1/800-227-3360 for further information.  All of these details will 
  124. be included on the upgrade mailer that ZDS will send to registered users 
  125. of ZDS products.  ZDS' engineers have compiled this compatibility list for 
  126. Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and MS-DOS version 5.0:

  160. The CAC will provide special instructions for installation, hardware 
  161. configurations, or hardware upgrades to optimally run the specially 
  162. marked models on the preceding list.

  164. Two models are marked as not compatible with Microsoft Windows version 
  165. 3.1, but compatible with MS-DOS version 5.0. These are the SupersPort 286 
  166. and Z-184 portable computers.  They are not compatible with Microsoft 
  167. Windows version 3.1 because both machines have CGA video.  Microsoft 
  168. Windows version 3.1 does not support CGA video.  In addition, Microsoft 
  169. Windows version 3.1 supports an 80286 processor at a minimum.  The Z-184 
  170. is below this minimum.  Customers can upgrade those computers to MS-DOS 
  171. version 5.0, however.

  173. Upgrade to the enhancements of Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and MS-DOS 
  174. version 5.0 from ZDS today!
