  30. Computer System Architects is sponsoring the University Parallel Processing
  31. Laboratories Workshop (UPPL) September 10-11 at Alta Lodge.  This workshop is
  32. intended for anyone interested in teaching hands-on parallel processing.  The
  33. setting is Alta Lodge, a great country inn famous as a ski and nature retreat,
  34. just 50 minutes up Little Cottonwood Canyon from the Salt Lake City airport.
  35.  
  36. The workshop will be an intensive 2-day course with lecture and hands-on
  37. laboratory time.  The proposed schedule of events is enclosed.  Instructors
  38. will include Chris Nevison of Colgate University, Rod Tosten of Gettysburg
  39. College, and Duane Call of Computer System Architects (along with a number of
  40. Brigham Young University Computer Engineering students who will function as
  41. lab assistants).  Dr. Nevison is chairman of Computer Science at Colgate
  42. University and is one of the pioneers in using the British-designed transputer
  43. for educational purposes.  He has conducted a number of NSF-funded
  44. Undergraduate PARallel Computing (UPARC) workshops relative to undergraduate
  45. laboratories for parallel computing. Dr. Tosten has participated in UPARC
  46. workshops and is currently using transputers for undergraduate parallel
  47. processing coursework.  He has experience on a variety of host machines and
  48. parallel processing languages including Occam and Logical Systems C.  Dr. Call
  49. is president of Computer System Architects and has been involved in transputer
  50. product development since 1985.  He has extensive experience in the development
  51. of undergraduate computing laboratories in connection with the Computer Science
  52. and Electrical Engineering Departments of Brigham Young University where he
  53. served as faculty member from 1971 to 1988.
  54.  
  55. Those attending the UPPL workshop will gain a thorough understanding of the
  56. use of transputer-based laboratories in parallel processing education.
  57. Workshop participants will be introduced to C.A.R. Hoare's Communicating
  58. Sequential Processes (CSP) concepts and their embodiment in the SGS-Thomson
  59. /Inmos transputer and the Occam2 programming language.  Participants will be
  60. encouraged to complete a number of hands-on laboratory exercises, writing
  61. multi-processing programs for execution on single and parallel transputer
  62. processors.  They will also be exposed to parallel programming environments
  63. for C, FORTRAN, Pascal and Modula-2.  Extensive lecture, lab and curriculum
  64. notes will be provided so that participants can return to their respective
  65. institutions and launch economical and effective teaching laboratories for
  66. undergraduate education programs.

  68. The total cost of the two-day workshop is $375.00, including meals & lodging.

  201. Thursday, Sept. 10.  Participants should plan to arrive in Salt Lake City
  202. during the afternoon or early evening on Wednesday, Sept. 9.  Your registration
  203. fee includes two evening meals at Alta Lodge, either Wednesday and Thursday
  204. evening, or Thursday and Friday evening, and assumes that you will stay at the
  205. lodge Wednesday and Thursday nights (additional night or nights are available
  206. by reservation directly with Alta Lodge at 801-742-3500).  If you desire, Alta
  207. Lodge will arrange for a taxi to meet you at the Salt Lake City airport.  The
