- If you've heard this before, hit 'n', else this almost a FAQ and here's my
- approach to the HX-expansion problem. I use HX's as terminals sometimes:
-
- The Tandy 1000 EX/HX use a 'Plus-style' expansion buss. There are two
- practical differences between the 'Plus' buss and the PC/XT buss are: 1)
- the amount of power cards can draw and 2) the connectors used.
-
- The power supply in the EX/HX isn't very big, so you can only power things
- like: a serial port, extra printer port, wd8003 (8 bit!) EtherNet board,
- or a small CDROM interface. Don't even *think* of a hard-card, stuffed AST
- RamPage, SoundBlaster, 3Com network board, or smart SCSI interface.
-
- The solution to the connector problem requires electronics parts and a small
- bench vise or clamp. It's just a short (2-4") adaptor cable which plugs into
- the 'Plus' expansion socket on the 1000's motherboard (or the memory/DMA
- board 25-1062). Persuading a hardware hacker type to do it shouldn't be hard
- if you don't like working on hardware. 8{) I had the parts in my junk bins,
- but DigiKey(MN) (800 555 1212), Active(CA) (same), Mouser(TX) (817-555-1212),
- etc... should have them cheap. I can look them up, send mail if you need help.
-
- I would recommend using a dual serial board (like 25-4025). Avoid the dual-
- serial+dual-printer+floppy+game+IDE etc... cards - they will draw too much.
- I also advise using an external modem with it. External modems have their
- own power supply and can save your motherboard. [I've lost the line drivers
- on my serial port in a storm. I also just tossed a 1000TX+20Mb hard card+
- *internal* modem similarly hit by lightning. Not one usable part!]
