  34.  The    Fifth    Australian   Supercomputing   Conference,    with
  35.  "Supercomputing  -  The Competitive Advantage" as its  theme,  is
  36.  scheduled for  Melbourne's  World Congress Centre  from  December
  37.  7 to 9 , 1992.
  38.  
  39.  While  recognising   the   importance  of  the   association   of
  40.  scientific  and  engineering  research  with  the  supercomputer,
  41.  a   major    Conference     objective   is     to   ensure   that
  42.  connections  are  made  between  commerce, industry and research;
  43.  between  people,  ideas,  technologies  and  tools.  This  is the
  44.  direction of  world industry  and  commerce, and  it  must become
  45.  the  Australian  way.

  49.  The Conference venue will be the World Congress Centre Melbourne, 
  50.  located on the corner of Spencer and Flinders Streets  Melbourne, 
  51.  adjacent to the scenic Yarra River, and  close  to  the  business 
  52.  heart of Melbourne.

  54.  THE CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
  55.  
  56.  The  theme for the Fifth Australian Supercomputing  Conference  - 
  57.  SUPERCOMPUTING - THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE, has  been  chosen  in  
  58.  order to highlight the need for Australian business, industry and 
  59.  commerce  to  take  advantage  of  supercomputing,  to   gain   a 
  60.  competitive advantage  in global markets.  Research  institutions
  61.  are already experienced Supercomputing users, and are  poised  to 
  62.  assist business in the use of this technology.
  63.  
  64.  The  Conference  Programme  Committee  is  planning  to  schedule  
  65.  sessions designed specifically  to  encourage  senior  management  
  66.  participation, and attendance from the  wider business community.
  67.  
  68.  Invitations are  being  extended to  a  number  of  distinguished 
  69.  speakers from Australia and overseas to  address  the  conference 
  70.  issues, and a number of specialist  individuals will be sponsored  
  71.  by  the  various   companies   which   manufacture   and   market 
  72.  supercomputers and  associated  services.  The  Fifth  Australian  
  73.  Supercomputing Conference will  include  plenary  sessions,  con-
  74.  current streams and poster sessions.

  77.  Papers  are especially invited  on the uses of supercomputing  in
  78.  the following areas:

  80.  Agribusiness research, automotive design and testing, banking and 
  81.  finance, chemical analysis, drug  design  and  testing, financial 
  82.  modelling, industrial design and production,  weather forecasting  
  83.  and climate-change research,  mining  analysis,  other scientific
  84.  and  technical  applications.

  86.  Papers addressing   issues of  future   technologies,   including
  87.  networking, software, hardware and storage systems, are also very
  88.  welcome.

  93.  The  Fifth  Australian Supercomputing Conference in  Melbourne is 
  94.  being  hosted by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology  and 
  95.  The University of Melbourne.

  100.  A Supercomputing  and  trade  exhibition  will be held  featuring 
  101.  supercomputers,    mini-supercomputers,    massively     parallel 
  102.  computers, high performance workstations, software,  peripherals,  
  103.  storage systems, industry services and bureaux, and publications.

  110.  FIRST AND FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

  112.  The scope of the Fifth Australian Supercomputing Conference  will 
  113.  include (but not be restricted to) the following themes:
  114.  
  115.  *  RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS, COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
  116.  
  117.         Papers describing the use of  Supercomputing  in  business  
  118.         and industrial applications will be especially welcome.
  119.  
  120.  *  SCIENTIFIC/RESEARCH APPLICATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT
  121.  
  122.         Papers  should  describe  the  use  of  Supercomputing  in 
  123.         research advances, or  describe  research  on  algorithms,  
  124.         architectures   for   high   performance   computing,   or 
  125.         application of research to real world problems.
  126.  
  127.  All  papers will be refereed and must be submitted  according  to 
  128.  the conditions outlined below.  Presentation  at  the  Conference 
  129.  will not preclude later publication elsewhere,  but  papers  must 
  130.  not  be  presented  to  any  other  scientific  body  before  the 
  131.  Conference.

  133.  There will be a prize of a portable  personal  computer  for  the 
  134.  best delivered paper.
  135.  
  136.  PREPARATION OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS
  137.  
  138.  *  Original research papers and application-oriented papers, that 
  139.  have  not  been  previously  presented  and,  that  describe  new 
  140.  technical contributions in topic areas, are solicited.
  141.  
  142.  *  Initially,  papers,  or an abstract of up  to  200  words  are 
  143.  invited,  and  may  be  sent by e-mail to csrcb@mel.dit.csiro.au.
  144.  The  authors' names, affiliations, complete return address of the
  145.  first  author ,  e-mail address, telephone  and facsimile numbers
  146.  should also be included.
  147.  
  148.  *  The date, time and session for presentation will be determined 
  149.  when the Programme Committee has refereed  all  submissions,  and 
  150.  all  authors will be notified.  Some papers may be  accepted  for 
  151.  poster presentation.
  152.  
  153.  *  Each author must submit an original plus three photo copies of 
  154.  the paper.
  155.  
  156.  *  The accepted paper is to be a maximum of ten single  sided  A4 
  157.  pages  in length and will be reproduced directly by photo  offset 
  158.  from the  original material submitted by the author.   The  first 
  159.  page should include the title and abstract of the paper and leave 
  160.  space for, but not include, the authors' name  and  affiliations.
  161.  Electronic submission of papers is acceptable, but authors should 
  162.  contact the Programme Committee  first  to  check  on  acceptable 
  163.  formats. 
  164.  
  165.  *  A cover page should be supplied, giving the title at  the  top 
  166.  of the page (in upper case lettering), followed by  the  authors'
  167.  names, affiliations, and for a designated author, complete postal 
  168.  address, e-mail address, telephone and facsimile numbers. 
  169.  
  170.  *  Type  font  should  not be smaller  than  10  point,  save  in 
  171.  footnotes etc.  Page  layout  should  allow  a  25mm  margin  for 
  172.  binding and authors should assume that each paper will begin on a 
  173.  right-hand page.

  175.  *  The author must  include  within  the  page  limit,  all  text 
  176.  (single  or  double  spaced), equations,  drawings,  figures  and 
  177.  references.   Figures,  tables and drawings must be  legible  and 
  178.  appear on the page exactly as they are to be reproduced.

  199.  CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

  201.  All  contributors  to the programme will be required to  pay  the 
  202.  full registration fee.
  203.  
  204.  Accepted papers must be presented in the prescribed camera  ready 
  205.  format on layout sheets that will be  provided  with  preparation 
  206.  guidelines.  If final copy is  not  returned  by  the  due  date, 
  207.  30 OCTOBER 1992 as given in the speakers'  timetable,  the  paper 
  208.  will be excluded from the proceedings  and  presentation  at  the 
  209.  Conference, at the committee's  discretion.  In  extreme  circum-
  210.  stances, it  may  be  permissible  for  contributing  authors  to 
  211.  provide up to 300 copies of printed papers  for  distribution  at 
  212.  the Conference.

  214.  Authors  would  retain copyright, but would be required  to  give 
  215.  permission  for their papers to be reproduced in  the  Conference 
  216.  proceedings.   These  proceedings  will  be  distributed  to  all 
  217.  registered delegates at the Conference.  Selected sessions may be 
  218.  videotaped  and  author's permission will also  be  required  for 
  219.  these sessions.
