- Hi everyone,
-
- Awhile back I posted to this group asking for opinions about using a
- 3/80 as a diskless client server. The general consensus was that it
- would work adequately, but it would help to upgrade the 3/80 from 8
- meg to 16 meg of memory.
-
- Anyhow, I've been running the 3/80 in the server configuration for
- awhile now and it has been working well (probably because most of its
- clients are 3/50s which are running the Xkernel software, which
- doesn't generate much paging to and from the server).
-
- So, last week we stripped a couple of 386i's we had lying around for
- parts, and I ended up with a bunch of extra 1-meg SIMMs. I decided to
- go ahead and try putting 8 of them in my 3/80 to max its memory out at
- 16 megs.
-
- To make a long story short, it didn't work. After installing the
- SIMMs (which filled up every bank on the board) and powering the
- machine on, it just sat there in test mode (blank screen, green light
- on the front blinking on and off) forever. I removed the SIMMs and
- everything worked fine again.
-
- Does anyone know what's wrong? The SIMMs are of the same type (same
- numbers on the chips). I double checked to make sure they were all
- seated properly. Could one of them be bad, or are there jumpers I
- have to set somewhere, or are they simply not compatible? I didn't
- have much time to fool around with the machine, since it serves one of
- our labs and several faculty machines.
-
- Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks,
- Paul
