>The system is only a few months old and came with a Seagate 424 drive. The errors didn't show up until after I attached a Hitachi DK516C-16 as sd1. The Hitachi came from a Novell fileserver, and it formatted with no problems. At first I thought perhaps I had a bad scsi cable between the cpu and the Hitachi, so I replaced it, but when I came in the next morning, the errors were back.
An obvious culprit is termination. If the Hitachi still has it's
terminator packs on-board, and some other drive in the chain is either
internally or externally terminated, strange things will happen.
I make it a policy to search and destroy internal terminating resistor
packs and terminate with a plug at the end of the chain only. Although
I will admit once to looking foolish recently when I swore up and down
a Wren VII had had them removed and thus "obviously" needed no checking.
Hitachi technical support should be able to provide you with the
information needed to remove them. They are usually SIPs or DIPS
near the rear of the controller.
