- We are looking for assistance with SCSI errors we've been having.
- Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-
- CONFIGURATION:
-
- Sparc 1, 40M ram, 8 bit video, internal 424M seagate drive (sd0),
- external 1.4G seagate drive (sd1), exabyte tape drive (st0).
- SunOS Release 4.1.2 (GENERIC) #2: Wed Oct 23 10:52:58 PDT 1991
- Version 1.0 roms.
-
- PROBLEMS:
-
- 2 problems with the SCSI bus.
-
- First problem occurs on power up (all other devices already on),
- about 25% of the time the first message that appears is
- 'SCSI hung - perhaps an external device is off', then it does its
- testing then we get the > prompt (typing 'n' then 'reset' always
- enables the maching to boot up).
-
- The second problem occurs when trying to use the exabyte drive. We
- continuously get 'write error' at random places into the tape.
-
- HISTORY:
-
- We started with a diskless ss1 and upgraded it to become our server
- (to 3 other diskless clients some macs and some pcs). We added the
- two drives and the exabyte, installed 4.1.2. Then everything worked
- fine for two months. We were doing daily backups (weekend level 0) for
- the last one of the two months without any problems. Then without
- changing anything (except copying over a very large - 400M - directory)
- we started getting write errors and the following SCSI transport error.
-
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: esp0: Current command timeout for Target 1 Lun 0
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: esp0: State=DATA_DONE (0xa), Last State=DATA (0x9)
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: esp0: Cmd dump for Target 1 Lun 0:
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: esp0: cdb=[ 0x8 0xb 0x8 0x10 0x10 0x0 0x0 0x0 0x0 0x0 ]
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: sd1: SCSI transport failed: reason 'reset': retrying command
- Jul 19 03:16:59 evds-sparc vmunix: sd0: SCSI transport failed: reason 'reset': retrying command

- ATTEMPED SOLUTIONS:
-
- * All the external devices work on a Sparc 2 (several tests) running 4.1.2.
-
- * Tried many different tapes (Exabyte and Sony) - same errors
-
- * Got a replacement for the Exabyte - same errors
-
- * Tried replacing the 424M internal drive - same errors (then returned drive)
-
- * Swapped the mother board with another from a ss1 - same errors
-
- Then we were told a ssp wasn't rated to power a 424M drive so we bought
- an external shoebox. That still did not fix the problem. We've had several
- people look at it (including two authorized sun technicians) without success.
-
- The system runs fine - all software works - but we can't do backups or tars
- and we get the SCSI transport errors.
-
- Thanks in advance for any help. Please email if possible to:

- note: this was also posted to comp.sys.sun.admin but this posting
