- We recently bought some shoebox SCSI disks to put on some Sun-3/50s, and
- for the price we got, we didn't get a nice format.dat entry. (Nor a
- tech support department with a clue.)
-
- We've put together a format.dat entry from the drive datasheet, but
- we've got some questions:
-
- 1. How to you set the "cache" value? Our drive has 128kB of cache.
- I notice that other SCSI drives in format.dat have cache values of
- 0x07, 0x10, and 0x11. What do these values mean?
-
- 2. How do you choose the number of alternate cylinders, tracks, and
- sectors?
-
- 3. What is the significance of the fmt_time entry, other than determining
- the estimated time to format? Is it critical?
-
- We're trying to format a Seagate ST3283N. We've tried no asect, and
- asect=1. We've tried no cache value, and cache=0x07.
-
- The symptom is that we can format it fine, and have no problem
- dd'ing the miniroot onto rsd0b. However, if we try to boot into
- miniroot, vmunix loads, then immediately dies on a "PAGE MAP" problem.
- This occurred on two different machines, one with rom 1.6 and one with
- rom 2.6.
-
- Any ideas?
