- Recently I posted questions about MacX and working with Sunds and
- Openwindows. Thanks to the many people who responded to me! I am slowly
- getting up to speed on MacX at least even if I am still having trouble with
- ARC and OPENWINDOWS.
-
- I am now getting MacX to at least work with remote commands, such as Xterm,
- cmdtool, etc. Several of you have said you would send your setup to work
- with openwin. That I still need to get since I cannot get openwindows to
- work itself. Through suggestions by several I invoked the following remote
- command in MacX. I get the message that a new X11 client is attempting to
- connect to MacX. Do you wish to permit the connection. I say OK and I got
- the following message in MacX's output window.when I tried to run
- openwindows:
-
- /sgs/openwin/bin/olwm -display "@display"
-
- olwm: Fatal X Error: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
- Perhaps there is another window manager running?
-
- So what did I do wrong????
-
- Some important setup points regarding my system. I am using rooted windows
- for openwindows (someone said I need to do that). I do get the same error
- though if I try to run openwindows via the above if I use an unrooted
- window also though. I am using a Mac IIsi, and my monitor is only the
- little 12 inch Apple RGB. So could that be the source of my problems with
- openwindows.
-
-
- My second question. Since I have not been able to get openwindows to work,
- I thought (perhaps wrongly) I could invoke the ARC/INFO program I want to
- use with openwindows on MacX. When I run Arc 6.0 from an Xterm color rooted
- window I get it to run and I get the message from the sun that a new X11
- client is attempting to connect to MacX. Do you wish to permit the
- connection. I say OK and then ARC 6.0 runs, says it is setting terminal
- type to WORKSTATION Console and on the following line SGSARC {terminal}. At
- that point my color rooted Xterm window is no longer active, but no other
- X11 clients show up. Those of you who are ARC users do you have any idea
- what ARC did when it requested the new X11 client? At this point I am
- stumped as to what the new X11 client is (no window appears, but the XTERM
- window is no longer active so I suspect an unseen display has been invoked
- or some kind of error has occured. How do you get ARC to run in a remote
- client window so that it will do openwindow menus? That is what I am
- ultimately trying to do.
-
- As a further experiment if I run XTERM and then ARC from an unrooted color
- window I get the same result with one difference. Other windows actually
- appear when I have run the command for Arc 6.0. The Xterm unrooted color
- window is inactive now, just like the color rooted, but the two new windows
- are ESRI (1) and ESRI (2) (ESRI is the company that developed ARC). But
- these windows do nothing, I cannot type anything in them. But perhaps this
- will help someone tell me what I need to do to get Arc running so that it
- will do menus from MacX.
