  15. Ok.  I'm really frustrated now.

  17. I've been mucking with our uucp configuration recently (got some new faster
  18. modems) and have seem to found an odd limit/bug in SunOS 4.1.1 uucp
  19. (basically BNU/HDB SVR3 uucp).

  21. As an example, I had several sites configured as such:

  24.     foosite Any ACU tb19200 Out5551212 ogin:--ogin: xxxxx ssword: xxxxx

  26.     ACU ttyz05 - tb19200 tbplus
  27.     ACU ttyz05 - tb9600 tbplus
  28.   Dialers excerpt:

  31. The modems were configured/locked to talk at 19200, and dialing out using
  32. tip(1) worked fine (as well as dialing in).  However, I could not get cu(1)
  33. to dial out, and, when I watched the uucico debug output, it appeared to be a
  34. speed problem.

  36. So, I dropped the speed on the modems to 9600 and changed the line from the
  37. Systems file to be:
  38.     foosite Any ACU tb9600 Out5551212 ogin:--ogin: xxxxx ssword: xxxxx

  40. Now everything works fine (except slower).  The SunOS 4.1.1 "System and 
  41. Network Administration Guide", section 3 "Network Communications
  42. Administration", chapter 21 "Administering the UUCP System", says that direct
  43. links may achieve "[t]ransfer rates of up to 19200 [bps]."  There is no such
  44. restriction listed just below in the paragraph describing Telephone line
  45. connections using ACUs, nor anywhere else that I have looked.

  47. Ok, so here comes my question:  It this version of the UUCP software that
  48. brain-dead that I can't run ACU devices faster than 9600 bps?  If so, is
  49. there a system patch somewhere that I can apply to alter this fact?  If not,
  50. this must be a "bug."

  52. Other potentially relevant systems information:  SunOs 4.1.1 on Sparc2.
  53. Modems connected using a Sun "Serial Parallel Controller" in an SBus slot
  54. (adds 8 serial ports and 1 parallel port).  Note that the documentation for
  55. this product explicitly states that I may run devices at speeds upto 38400.
  56. Modems in question: Telebit T3000, Telebit TrailBlazer Plus, MultiTech
  57. MultiModem V.32.
