- Wall Street Journal, Thursday July 30th:
-
- 'Silicon Graphics Posts Loss, Cites Merger And MIPS Deficit'
-
- SGI in its first quartely report since its merger with MIPS Computer
- Systems Inc., posted a large fiscal fourth-quarter net loss stemming
- from merger expenses and an operating deficit at MIPS.
- Excluding MIPS's loss and merger expenses, though, the computer maker
- posted a 51% jump in earnings, thanks to strong sales of its machines.
- SGI, which officially acquired MIPS June 29, posted a combined net
- loss of $108.9 million, or $1.88 a share, for the quarter ended June 30,
- compared with combined net income of $9.3million, or 14 cents a share,
- in the year-earlier quarter. Sales were $239.8 million, up from combined
- sales of $207.9 million in the 1991 period.
- The 1992 results include a $110 million charge fore merger-related
- expenses. And MIPS, which has suffered a string of quarterly deficits,
- recorded a net loss of $20 million in the quarter. A SGI spokeswoman
- said the company doesn't anticipate any additional merger-related
- write-offs.
