- My Indigo started having system disk problems two weeks ago. I get errors like
-
- Media error: Unrecovered data block read error,. Block #570354 (687156)
- Media error: No addr mark found in ID field,. Block #612519 (729321)
-
- Always in the second half of the disk, and apparently not on a particular
- platter. The disk is a Seagate ST1480 bought from SGI, but I am out of
- warranty. (A 90-day warranty is awfully easy to get out of, but I knew
- the risk and am certainly not regretting buying.) Removing the front panel
- and having a big fan blow air onto the disk fixes the problem, but it's
- not the sort of solution I like. I reformatted twice, but that did not help.
- I am running 4.0.4.
-
- It is probably unrelated, but my external 80-MB ST1096N news spool disk
- is hard to access, "fsck /dev/dsk/dks0d5s7" fails but
- "cat /dev/dsk/dks0d5s7 >/dev/null & sleep 180; fsck /dev/dsk/dks0d5s7"
- works, reluctantly. Some typical messages from SYSLOG:
-
- sc0,5,0: cmd=0x12 timeout after 30 sec. Resetting SCSI bus
- dks0d1s0 (/): retrying request
- sc0,5,0: cmd=0x28 timeout after 30 sec. Resetting SCSI bus
- dks0d5s10: retrying request
- dks0d1s0 (/): retrying request
-
- Note the dks0d1s0 problems here. But, when I remove all SCSI hardware except
- the system disk, my main problem still exists. The ST1096 disk is from Fry's,
- and came with no documentation whatsoever :-( I don't really care about it.
-
- If my system disk is in fact dying, I'd like to replace it with a larger
- one, at least 1 GB. Are the HP disks (eg, 558) working on Indigos? Are there
- better ones? (I'll never touch Seagate again though. Two times is enough.)
- Can I expect a drop in price when the 2.4 GB disks come out? When?
-
- Here's the relevant part of hinv:
- 1 33 MHZ IP12 Processor
- Main memory size: 32 Mbytes
- Disk drive: unit 5 on SCSI controller 0
- CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0
- Disk drive / removable media: unit 3 on SCSI controller 0: 720K/1.44M floppy
- Tape drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0: DAT
- Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0
- Integral SCSI controller 0: Version WD33C93A, revision 9
- Graphics board: GR2-XS24 with Z-buffer
-
- Thanks a lot for any help. It is rumored that life is possible without a
- computer, but I am not convinced...
