- | What's the deal on prom password protection for other machines besides
- | the Indigo, especially the older ones like the 4D-240? When we got
- | the CPU boards swapped recently, I assumed we'd have this ability, but
- | it doesn't seem to be there. Is there just no room in the older proms
- | for this? Is it available as a special option? I've been trying to
- | find out from various people locally, but no one seems to know.
-
- All future ESD systems will have it, and probably all future systems
- period, although I can't promise that for sure. The 4X0 systems
- have it.
-
- PROMs for the older systems weren't integrated with the newer code
- and rebuilt, although that may be done at some point. Building
- new PROMs for old machines can be a tedious and bug-prone endeavor,
- when there have been many new features added in the meantime. SGI
- has seldom done this (it also means a lot of test time, and we would
- rather put that into new hardware or software releases).
