- Problems with my machine multiply. Here are three on which I would
- appreciate advice from the net:
-
- 1. NFS mounting. I have a script that mounts various directories from
- other machines on my PI. When I try to mount directories from one of
- these machines I now get the following:
-
- /etc/mount -t nfs -o rw,hard,bg,intr cyber:/nve/ief0101/biome /net/cyber0
- mount: cyber:/nve/ief0101/biome server not responding: Port mapper failure - Timed out
- mount: backgrounding
- /net/cyber0
-
- Is that an error on the machine "cyber" or on my machine? Since I can
- mount directories from another system I suspect "cyber" is at fault, but
- it would be nice to have this clarified. By the way, I can log in on
- "cyber" and find the relevant directories.
-
- 2. Su logins. This is a more detailed account of a problme I reported
- before. My .sgisession file contains lines like
- /usr/sbin/winterm -geometry -40+90 -c su - bill
- which always worked fine until recently, when the window displays a
- warning that the mail is unreadable. It turns out that the part of the
- login sequence that sets MAIL to /usr/mail/$USER does not always
- function, so bill's MAIL variable is still /usr/mail/silvert.
- (The MAIL variable gets set correctly about 20% of the time.) Just
- "setenv MAIL /usr/mail/bill" fixes it, but what causes this?
-
- 3. Mailbox timing problem. I use mailbox to alert me of incoming mail.
- As of about an hour ago it started misbehaving. Mail arrives, the flag
- goes up; I read it, close the mailbox, the flag goes down. Then a
- second or so later the flag goes up again, even though no new mail has
- arrived. So the flag is always up now. Any ideas?
-
- Thanks, Bill
