  14. In BYTE Magazine (July 1992 issue), there is an article about the new
  15. R4000-based Crimson systems. The article ends with the following
  16. `FACTS':

  18.     Crimson/VGXT,     128 MB of RAM
  19.             780 MB disk space
  20.  
  21.             $ 110,900
  22.  
  23. (I don't know if any taxes should be added to this price)

  25. Recently, I have received the following quote from our Dutch SGI 
  26. distributor:

  28.     Crimson/VGX,    128 MB of RAM
  29.             1,6 GB disk space
  30.  
  31.             $ 198,200 (1 $ = Dfl. 1.80)

  33. Local taxes (called BTW), as well as a 30% educational discount are 
  34. included in this quote.

  36. Clearly, the quote from BYTE is much better:

  38.     Pro:    VGXT vs. VGX graphics
  39.         $ 110,900 vs. $ 198,200 (local taxes ?)
  40.  
  41.     Con:    780 MB disk vs. 1,6 GB disk 
  42.         (the 1,6 GB disk costs $ 10,800)

  44. I suppose that the quote I got is comparable to any quote one would get
  45. in Europe. The question arrises why there is such a big difference in
  46. pricing between both continents.
