  21. the motor start jumper(s) set (i.e., do not spin up until a
  22. startunit command is issued); all ASD systems except 4X0 and
  23. Crimson need to power up immediately because their PROMs don't
  24. know how to issue startunit.

  26. There are 2 reasons for delaying poweron.  First, for internal
  27. drives, the power supply really can't handle spinning up multiple
  28. drives at the same time.  Second, most drives will not respond
  29. to inquiry or other commands during power on spinup, and we
  30. expect drives to respond to inquiry within a few seconds of
  31. power on.  Most of the ASD systems have no power on SCSI diags,
  32. other than the act of booting itself, and by the time they
  33. get up to the kernel, the drives have all spun up; the ESD
  34. systems, particularly from Indigo on, boot much more quickly
  35. up to the time when the rc scripts run.
