- >This all makes sense for the inidgo, but does the same argument apply to the 4D/35 as well?
-
- Yes it does. The 4D/35 is basically the same computer in a different form
- factor. It uses the same gate arrays and same architecture as the Indigo.
- The Indigo lacks the VME port and compatibilty with the PI GR1.x graphics
- board. The 4D/35 lacks support for starter graphics. The 4D/35 uses
- 64K data/instruction caches in the form of 30 16Kx4 SRAMs, where the Indigo
- uses 32K data/instruction caches in the form of 3 8Kx20x2 SRAMs. These
- SRAMs weren't fast enough at the time to make the Indigo faster than 33MHZ.
- That, in a nutshell, is the basic difference (electrically) between the
- two.
-
- SGI may be growing in leaps and bounds, but it isn't big enough to handle more
- than one entry systems architecture design at the same time.
