- Chris,
-
- Be prepared to have several people at SGI tell you why what you want to do is
- a bad idea. I have tried to convince them that users WANT to have gl programs
- work via X11, so it can be viewed on X-terms and other workstations' X-Servers.
- They will tell you to use VOGL (Very Ordinary GL), which is a gl compatible
- library which implements a large subset of GL. VOGL is freeware from
- Austrailia, found at ftp.uu.net/graphics/vogl and somewhere at
- wuarchive.wustl.edu.
- SGI thinks it is a BAD idea to provide folks GL functionality on top of xlib.
- They want you to WAIT until everyone (or I guess anyone) implements the proposed
- GL extensions to X. Which is fine, whenever that happens, and even then, what
- about the 300,000,000 or so X-Terms which we users ALREADY own?
- X must be too slow of a vehicle to qualify as worthy enough to transport GL
- calls which are usually chommped on by a gang of ASICs. Maybe it would be
- embarrassing to SGI for folks to see GL based programs running Soooo slowly
- on an X-Terminal, or a Sparc's X-Server. Nevermind the GREAT UTILITY to the
- SGI USERS which would be achieved. Again, just WAIT for gl extensions to X
- to be implemented in the market.
- I really get a migrane every time I see a note pass by on info-iris that
- starts out : "... I have a gl program that I want to use with an X-Terminal".
- I just suck it in, and avoid the inevitable brick-wall conversation with SGI
- folks... BUT, your's is easily the twelfth I've seen in two months.
- Depressingly, during my previous "GL on X" exchanges with SGI on info-iris,
- only a couple of folks piped up and shouted, "Yea, that [my point] makes
- sense..." All of the other people that later, and earlier asked relevant
- "Can I do GL on my X-Terminal?" questions did not make their views known.
- I guess I'll start a count of those types of questions as they blow by the
- net, and send a personal note to each individual, suggesting they talk to their
- SGI sales person, letting them know they WANT "GL on X", in addition to having
- mega-fast "GL on IRISs", as always.
-
- A mind-set is a very tough thing to change.....sometimes, even in
- Northern California, where, usually, free-thinking and openness to new ideas
- is the rule, not the exception.
