- Sounds like netinfo wasn't running properly, Ive seen this sort of
- problem before when booting into single user mode (boot sd -s from NeXT>
- prompt). Without netinfo running (even locally) the machine uses
- /etc/passwd for its user information - so if your not in there you have a
- problem! I discovered this when trying to change the password in single
- user mode then going multiuser - the change hadn't been noticed (going
- multi-user starts the netinfo daemons and from then on /etc/passwd is
- ignored). I sorted this out by starting the netinfo daemons by hand (you
- can see which ones by examining /etc/rc) then doing niload to load
- /etc/passwd into local netinfo.

- Still all that doesn't explain why rebooting sorted things out - are you
- sure nothing else had changed?.
