- I ran into this too. I even sent a bug report to NeXT about it giving, in
- great detail, the exact events which I thought had caused this behavior to
- start for my userid.

- Based on the above I poked around a bit, switching between accounts and
- playing with various defaults & stuff (via the DefaultMgr.app program
- available on various FTP archives). Turns out the answer is totally
- unrelated to the detailed explanation I gave NeXT.

- In the Preferences application, switch to the panel that is all the way to
- the right (the one for Unix expert preferences, the icon includes a
- ribbon-like thing). If you have set the preference "Large File System",
- then the Workspace will *-not-* display the double-home icons for other
- people's home directories.

- Apparently it assumes that "large file system" also means "large password
- file", and it doesn't want to keep track of the home directories of every
- user. I only have a few users on my system, but I had "Large file system"
- set because the machine is hooked up to the AFS world.
