  12. I'll second the previous postings about the advantages of the Dvorak keyboard  
  13. layout.  The statistics on key frequencies only start to indicate how much  
  14. nicer it is to use than qwerty.

  16. It's also easier and quicker than you might think to get used to a new layout.

  18. After several years of using the Dvorak layout (e.g., the one that was appended  
  19. to the original posting), I decided that it wasn't *perfect* and made a few  
  20. alterations of my own.  After some experimentation I came up with the  
  21. following, which I recommend to present and potential Dvorak users:

  31. These alterations can be characterized as follows:

  33. 1. Switch the I and the U: the former is much more common than the latter, and
  34.    putting it under a resting position is an out-and-out improvement.
  35.  
  36. 2. Move the Y over so that it is still close to the I, and closer to the other
  37.    vowels in general.
  38.  
  39. 3. Bring P down so that it is still conveniently hit by the left index finger.
  40.  
  41. 4. Put Q onto the right side, to make the inevitable sequence QU[aoei] easy
  42.    rather than tricky.
  43.  
  44. 5. The rest of the alterations are just a matter of taste.  I put V where Z had
  45.    been, to make room for Q; K where X had been, to keep it in the same
  46.    neighborhood, and X where it combines well with P and most vowels (and where
  47.    it was in the qwerty layout!).

  51. generate his or her own.
