- Howdy,
-
- First of all, this is incorrect. NeXTSTEP x86 will support more than one
- video board for 16-bit color. How do I know this? I met the guy in charge
- of NeXTSTEP x86 in early June. This is not confidential information. He
- got up in front of our NeXT Developer's Class and talked to us about it.
- He told us some information and said it was allright to pass it on. So
- here it is;
-
- NeXTSTEP x86 already supports JAWS and Compuadd Q-Card's (or something)
- at THE TIME I WAS THERE (they already probably have a few more video
- boards lined up). They are looking to write drivers for many of the more
- powerful and available video cards in the CLone area. NeXTSTEP x86 also
- has support for a lot of the soundcards available. "A NeXT engineer is
- bonkers on sound", he said. That engineer went and acquired a handful of
- cards such as the Soundblaster and wrote some compatible drivers.
- Another thing, I would drop the "486" from NeXTSTEP. Its NOT OFFICIAL,
- but he mentioned that the 486 should be dropped because NeXTSTEP will run
- on a 386-sx, a 386-40Mhz, etc. Why? Support for NOTEBOOKS! The
- notebook/portable version will ship after the initial release of NeXTSTEP
- x86. I put in the "x86" just to make that clear. I think its much more
- suitable. If people would read FAQ's more often, they would notice a blurb
- in there on the "x86". Check the FAQ if you want more information.
- To penetrate a market as diverse as the DOS Clone world, NeXTSTEP must
- be compatible with many of the heavily-used cards. They realize that. The
- fellow in charge is quite a intelligent person who came across as knowing
- exactly what he is doing. I think everyone is going to be pleasantly
- surprised when it is released.
-
- Thanks!
