- Let's stop being naive for a second ... in the REAL WORLD where
- transaction processing is key, NeXT is not in the position to replace
- mainframes. For example, for security and transaction processing power,
- the IBM CICS is still hard to beat. Instead, user friendly computers such
- as NeXT, should be used to with the mainframes and make the information
- more presentable and accessible. The NeXT computers will also help to
- computerize many other duties (e.g. word processing) and make using
- computers more enjoyable. I cannot discuss in any detail what I do, but
- suffice to say that I am involved in the implementation of a massive
- wide-area corporate client-server information system that involves
- mainframes, VAXes, workstation servers, and personal computers (Macs and
- friends, no PCs thank you) ... and I believe this is the approach to IS in
- the 90s - co-workers who attended the last DB Expo confirm that we are
- definitely on the right track. It would be anything but silly to think
- personal computers will make mainframes extinct.
