  20. As some of you may have read, my NeXT has been suffering for 5 days of
  21. "Grey-Window-Syndrome": after a crash no new login window appeared
  22. just a grey window with an arrow. 
  23. I got lots of advice from helpful people (two of then from NeXT).
  24. After replacing /NextLibrary/Fonts, /etc/hostconfig, /etc/netinfo, the
  25. password database, and throwing out the CyrillicGothic.font, I_Comm
  26. (which I suspected to be responsible for the mess) I discovered this
  27. morning that the problem was caused by a corrupted keyboard file 
  28. in /NextLibrary/Keyboards ( I had modified it to reassign \ to Ctrl-/,
  29. using the /NextDeveloper/Demos/Keyboard application, and apprently
  30. the NeXT did not like this).  When I removed the two suspect keyboard
  31. files (which I detected by looking for files modified prior to the
  32. crash) everything returned to "normal".
  33. The file /usr/adm/messages was less than helpful.

  35. So if you have similar problems check the /NextLibrary for nonexistent
  36. or corrupted files.

  39. Pascal Chesnais, who spent many hours trying to reproduce the
  40. condition on his machine.
