  15. Does anyone have experience integrating an Exabyte 8500 tape drive with a 
  16. Mips M/120?  I am able to access the tape drive OK and can initiate a 
  17. backup using "cpio | dd".  When the backup completes (after dd reports the 
  18. number of blocks in/out), the kernel panics with the message:

  20.     PANIC: transfer mode not set
  21.  
  22. After rebooting a check of the tape shows that the backup was written
  23. properly.

  25. A check of the source files in /usr/reconfig/io shows that this message
  26. comes from the procedure phase() in the file spc.c.  I am not a SCSI guru
  27. and thus don't appreciate the significance of these routines.

  29. We are running RISC/os 4.52.  I am told the 8500 is a SCSI-2 device.  Could
  30. this have a bearing on this problem?  Does the OS fully support this drive?
