- Any insight on the following incompatibility?
-
- Hardware:
- Macintosh IIfx, 8 MB RAM
- Internal 80 MB Apple HD
- External "160SC" 160 MB Apple HD
- Apple CD SC CD-ROM Drive
-
- Software:
- System 7.0.1 + Tune-Up 1.1.1
-
- I wanted to increase available RAM, so I turned on virtual memory and
- 32-bit addressing. I created a 20 MB swap file on the external drive. I
- restarted, and the Mac froze right after the "Debugger installed" message.
-
- After much playing around, I determined that it *wasn't*
-
- - MacsBug 6.2.2 or any of my 'dcmd's
- - any of my other extensions (never got that far!)
-
- I finally determined that the culprit was my EtherTalk driver!!
- Restarting with either VM, 32-bit addr., or EtherTalk turned off would
- work perfectly! For the last case, I could open the Network control panel
- and switch to EtherTalk. This would cause one of three things to happen:
-
- - Immediate mouse freeze
- - Mouse still moves, but the Mac is dead
- - The Finder exits. Trying to switch to EtherTalk a second time
- results in immediate mouse freeze.
-
- This was all using the EtherTalk phase 2 driver installed by System
- 7.0.1. I also tried installing the driver from the Network Software
- Installer 1.2.1 disk (EtherTalk 2.3.1), with the same effect.
-
- I looked on AppleLink but couldn't find any reference to this problem.
- Does Apple know about this?
-
- I'm currently running with VM, EtherTalk, and *no* 32-bit addr., which
- limits me to 11 MB of virtual memory. Does anyone have a better work
- around?
-
- Has anyone seen this before? Am I the only one?
-
