- Average consumers, academics and MISers don't buy operating systems,
- IMHO. They look for a fast box and useable applications. Noone but
- folks like us thinks about or even knows about the operating system.
- To the rest of the world, the OS is part of the box. Hence, the OS
- must come with the box to be successful. This is why MS has been
- working so hard with manufacturers to have Windows come installed on
- their boxes. Still, folks I know have Windows that came with their
- machines, but they turn it off and start up plain vanilla WordPerfect
- or 123 to do their work. To judge the success of Windows, OS/2, NT,
- and Mac OS, let's look at the number of apps sold for each of those
- systems last quarter (well, NT hasn't shipped yet). I don't have
- references, but I'm willing to bet that Mac apps outsold all the
- others combined. Anyone have details? Refute or support me!
-
- Will low cost hardware manufacturers and buyers really stray from the
- standard Intel and DOS/Windows installation? Only if a new box/OS
- combination comes out that does everything that the old combination
- does, but faster and easier. So what hot new boxes are coming soon,
- bundled with which OS, and what apps are available for them? Well,
- maybe Mips R4000 and NT! But there's few apps... And if it runs
- DOS/Win apps, it'll be at an unacceptable crawl through emulation.
- Hmm, how 'bout Intel's P5 chip and OS/2? Guaranteed to run DOS/Win
- apps! But what clone maker will bundle OS/2? Well, what about the P5
- with DOS/Win? A sure winner, but that's not a change in HW/SW
- architecture, so eventually it's a dead end. Hey how about that new
- chip from IBM, Apple and Motorola? Fastest RISC in the West on a
- single chip! The OS is System 7, stable and supported today. There's
- an established base of apps that set the standard for DOS/Win apps.
- And we don't even need a fleet of RISC apps waiting when the machine
- ships. The toolbox calls will be executed from RISC ROMS, so
- emulation should be acceptable.
-
- The trio is even planning on licensing the technology! Hey! Does
- that mean clones? Looks like a potential winner here folks... Hint:
- buy stock in Apple before the release of the first PowerPC. Ok, ok,
- so I am unabashedly flag-waving.
-
- Heck, maybe we should all be hoping that Apple will always be in the
- number 2 position. That means they have to try harder. What do we
- care if people who don't really think about their computer system
- before buying get stuck with the industry standard?
-
- No offense intended to anyone. Please don't bother to flame, I won't
- respond.
