- Ok,
-
- I'm working this summer for some people who actually worked in the chip market.
-
- >Supposedly Intel (for example) receives an order for 2000 25Mhz chips and 6000
- >16Mhz chips. They make up 8000 chips and start testing at 25Mhz. When
- they have
- >2000 guaranteed 25mHz chips the rest are sent for testing at the lower speed.
-
- No, from what i've heard, they'd make over 800,000 chips. [The failure
- rate goes up with complexity by some weird relations that i don't have
- enough know-how to figure out for myself :-) ].
-
- As for speeds:
- I found out that they only make 1 type of memory for SIMMS, the chips
- get sorted into bins. Depending on how fast they operate and how
- reliable, they get dumped into that bin
-
- Now using 70ns SIMMS in a computer that asks for 80ns is giviing it quality.
- Putting 100ns when it asks for 80ns is asking for trouble
-
- Apple is very cautios i've found out. Apple supposably got only 33MHz
- 040s for its Quadra Line. Only clocking the 700 and 900 at 25MHz for a
- couple of possible reasons:
- 1. They wanted to 'play it safe'
- 2. 25MHz [outside] already made it 4times faster than a ci, why go all
- the way at once?
- 3. Price discrimination
-
- I don't know why they did it [A company is making OverDrive to clock em
- at 33], but it just goes back to Apple's insistence on high quality
-
- As for PCs, I've heard that Compaq is the best ibox and IBM is pretty
- good too. But i wouldn't trade my 700 for any PC :-)
