- A few interesting points for Mr. Bode, Mr. Moon
- and all the others who think that people who buy
- Macintoshes are stupid.
-
- For the past few years the largest Macintosh mail-order
- house, MacConnection, has offered 30-60 day money-back
- guarantees on most Macintosh software. When I was shopping
- for some software for my PC at work, I started looking at
- ads for PC Connection, which is owned by the same company.
- I assumed that PC Connection would naturally offer the same
- satisfaction guarantees that MacConnection does. Wrong! No
- one in the PC software industry seems to offer money-back
- guarantees. What does it say about Macintosh software vs.
- PC software if companies are willing to offer money-back
- guarantees on the former but not the latter?
-
- The software that I was looking for at the time was a
- Windows-based paint program. I needed to do some simple
- things, but not simple enough for Microsoft's Windows Paintbrush
- (which is part of Windows 3.1). When I started looking at
- Windows software, I found object-oriented draw programs, image-
- enhancement and photo retouching programs, but no bitmap-oriented
- paint programs. Fractal Painter came out shortly afterwards, but
- it is still, to the best of my knowledge, the *only* bitmap paint
- program that runs under Windows and not exactly cheap either. Why
- does Windows have such a shortage of basic, inexpensive graphics
- software?
-
- I got an advertisement in the mail today giving me the chance to
- buy Lotus Agenda through a special private offer. A great deal,
- apparently -- instead of the usual $399 list price, I can get it
- for $79. The brochure certainly makes the software sound impressive
- -- as impressive as the standard Hypercard stacks, at least. Why are
- PC users willing to spend $70-399 to get software equivalent to what
- comes free with the Mac?
-
- For $36, Apple will send you a four-color glossy developer's magazine
- *and* a Developer's CD-ROM, four times a year. The CD includes the
- complete text of Inside Macintosh, all Macintosh technical notes,
- human interface notes, publication guides, unreleased documentation,
- dozens of utilities for testing and debugging programs, system software
- for every region of the world, and a ton of source code. Why does
- Microsoft charge so much for its developer's documentation?
-
- It's interesting that when PC chauvinists start comparing prices,
- they never want to consider software.
-
- There is only one possible conclusion:
-
- PCs cost too much!!!
