  18.         [Apologies if this is FAQ or wrong group, I just couldn't find
  19. a better choice given our news feeds...]

  21.         I have a (probably stupid) set of questions about networking.
  22. In short, I want to try to move towards upgrading a small localtalk
  23. network to an Ethertalk network.  Here's some basic configuration
  24. data:

  26.         o  The network consists of a Mac II, a Mac SE, a couple of
  27.            networked printers, and a networked modem.
  28.  
  29.         o  The Mac SE has an accelerator card already occupying its
  30.            slot, so I can't add an ethernet card.
  31.  
  32.         o  The two Mac's talk using a Phonenet-based phone line,
  33.            while the rest of the stuff is in the same room as the
  34.            Mac II and uses normal Apple Localtalk connectors.s
  35.  
  36.  
  37.         I am _assuming_ that I want to do something generally like
  38. put an Ethernet card in the Mac II, get a SCSI-based Ethernet box
  39. for the Mac SE, and get an EtherTalk to Localtalk bridge to put all
  40. the rest of the devices on (printers and modem).  My questions then
  41. are:

  43.         o  Is this a valid assumption about the kind of configuration
  44.            that I need?
  45.  
  46.         o  Can use use 10-Base-T (or whatever it's called) between
  47.            the two macs over the existing phone line wiring used by
  48.            PhoneNet?
  49.  
  50.         o  What kinds of cards for the Mac II, adapter box for the SE,
  51.            and bridge would one recommend?
  52.  
  53.         Since this is a home system, I want to do this as cheaply as
  54. possible.  I am assuming that I can find prices on the order of $200 
  55. for a NuBus card for the Mac II, $300 for an external SCSI Ethernet
  56. box, and $500 for a bridge.  Are these out of the question?  Any
  57. recommendations on configuration, products, or places-to-buy would
  58. be a real help.
