- First of all, what you want is either AD or both. DD is useful only
- for archival to floppies and occasional selective use. Try to use it
- on a regular basis on everything on a hard disk and you'll quickly
- go nuts waiting for it to decompress and recompress any file you use.
-
- Now, you don't *have* to have DD to run AD, but you will find yourself playing
- ridiculous games to get around AD's limitations which, frankly, I believe
- were left in to push people into buying both products.
-
- These limitations are:
-
- 1 - No way to manually compress a file. Best you can do is set a short
- 'wait before scanning' period, then let AD do it automatically.
-
- 2 - No way to tell how much space has been saved for any given file.
-
- 3 - No way even to tell if any given file has been compressed, unless
- you're willing to let AD stick little 'DD' stamps on all your icons.
- If you want your icons to normally look normal, you have
- to bring up the AD control panel and set it to change *every* icon
- to show whether the corresponding file is compressed or not,
- check out the icon for the file you're interested in, then go back
- and reset the control panel.
-
- 4 - The worst thing about AD-only is there is NO WAY TO DECOMPRESS
- A FILE. I find this absolutely ridiculous. The only way to do it
- is to make a copy of the file (which will be created uncompressed),
- then delete the original, then rename the copy. I'm not kidding.
-
- 5 - No way to create a compressed copy of a compressed file.
-
- 6 - No way to compress anything on a floppy, or copy anything already
- compressed onto a floppy in compressed form.
-
- Now, I have both AD and DD, which I got from Salient as a special DD
- upgrade, so I'm very happy with the product. But that is how I think
- of the two in combination, as a single, integrated product. The fact
- that Salient is marketing them separately rather justifies the
- accusation the AD is "crippleware".
