- Seems that I've managed to provoke quite a discussion!
- More than I expected in fact. Based on what's been posted and mailed to me,
- there would seem to be support for such a group, just disagreement over what
- to name it.
-
- alt.sys.newton would seem to be the best place to put such a group.
-
- The main reason I am in favor of an alt instead of a comp group is that it
- is not certain that Newton will be the final name given to it, in fact it's
- probably just an internal project name, much as the Saratoga I'm typing this
- on was. However there are some alternative names that might be worth
- considering, particularly if there is a desire for a comp group NOW.
-
- *.sys.pda
- *.sys.apple.@
- *.sys.handhelds.@
- *.sys.palmtops.@
- *.sys.pen.@
-
- Where * is either alt or comp and @ is either newton or pda.
-
- If we are going to have a comp group now then I would prefer comp.sys.pda
- for the following reasons.
- 1) We dont know if newton will be the product's final name and there will be
- future PDA's other than newton, then a group ending in .pda would be a good
- choice for a permanent group. Furthermore, a group ending in .newton would
- be a good choice for a temporary group which is what I envision
- alt.sys.newton to be.
- 2) I am against *.sys.apple.@ since none of the other Apple products are there.
- They have their own distinct apple2 and mac heirarchies yet this device is
- certainly going to be a lot more different than the Apple][ and Mac's are.
- 3) If we have *.handhelds.@ or *.pen.@ we are making a value judgement that
- one or the other of the Newton's features is its main feature. I would like
- such a group to consider the system in total not just a bit or piece of it.
- 4) I feel that *.sys.palmtops.@ is in any case the wrong place for such a
- group. This is not a miniturized microversion of a regular computer.
-
- Since I have expanded the number of groups beyond the original two
- (alt.config and comp.sys.mac.misc) I am including below a copy of my
- original post.
-
- >There has been a lot of discussion of late about Newton the pen based PDA
- >that Apple will be introducing soon. Yet since this is not a Macintosh, and
- >will not be using the MacOS it really doesn't seem to belong in
- >comp.sys.mac.misc. Therefore, I propose the group alt.apple.newton an
- >unmoderated group for the discussion of this device. Comments will be
- >appreciated. If the consensus of opinion that I see is that such a group
- >would be useful, then I'll get to learn about how to create a newgroup. If
- >not, oh well.
- >BTW, if I get no comments at all I'll take this as a lack of interest in
- >such a group.
