- Local dealers, which carry a small inventory, impose the price hike.
- For example, color games typically push $70 CDN (after taxes, which
- I shall *not* get into) and can hit $80. So I always very carefully
- read the prices in the U.S. mail order ads, do some quick math in my
- head for exchange and GST andf shipping, and see if I come out ahead.
- Usually do (BTW, shipping costs are not inconsiderable) There
- are some things which I can get at good prices at the university
- bookstore (thank goodness for educational pricing). I have seen
- on a number of boxes the warning that the software is a U.S. and
- Canada version, and not for export; whether the reasoning is
- political or not, we can buy and use U.S. versions. I also buy
- 3rd party hardware mail order too.
-
- This discussion of crippled software got me thinking. I was
- browsing through an old issue of MacWeek that was discussing
- System 7.1. I thought the article said that 7.1 is going to
- be able to switch easily between international systems. My
- queation is, is the restricted software cued by what system
- is running? If so, will such a matter not become moot by 7.1
- (rather pointless, and petty to force intl users to switched
- to U.S. system software) I really don't know how the
- software is rigged, so maybe it won't be affected.
