- No there is NOTHING wrong with WinFAX. They had to "HACK" it up
- to work around the a HARDWARE problem !!!
-
- I did make some progress. I managed to connect to the Supra BBS
- with the supra at 2400. I assumed any 9600 baud modem would negotiate
- for speed based on line condition. Well the Supra does NOT and this
- is one of the Firmware fixes due out. ATN0 allowed me to drop the
- speed and make a connect.
-
- The other "firmware" fix is suppose to fix the problem with FAX
- that they worked around in WinFax.
-
- I also managed to get the WInfax patch. Well it will work with
- a FAX machine 4 offices over. But it cannot even detect the carrier
- from the exact same FAX machine 150 miles away. I have not figured out
- how to force a slower or dumber FAX connect (it might be the remote
- FAX won't talk dumber or slower). It acts as if it cannot hear the remote
- system at all (too weak a signal for the supra).
-
- I can run a dumb 2400 baud modem with no error correction and get no noise
- on the lines 150 miles away. So the lines are not that bad. I've had noisier
- lines within 5 miles.
-
- So my conclusion is that for long distance (150 miles which is not that far)
- the supra cannot deal with it. For DATA the best it can do is
- 2400 with error correction. For FAX it can't do ANYthing yet in distance.
-
- MY primary purpose it local 9600 data and I think it will be ok for that.
- But I did expect it to be able to better than 2400 at long distance at least
- sometimes. I also expected that it would do FAX at any distance at some
- speed.
-
- Can a $300 modem do coast-to-coast DATA at 9600 or 4800
- Can a $300 modem do coast-to-coast FAX at 9600 or other speed.
-
- Can the Supra do the above?
- Can a $700 modem do the above?
- Can any Modem do the above on non-conditioned lines?
