- Rumor is: 1) August 1, lots of Mac prices will drop on current products
- 2) October 15, new products may be announced
-
- General: For the 60030 and 60040 lines, this includes:
- LCII, SI, CI, QUADRA 700 and 950
-
- Rumor: All these will be upgraded later this year (extra features
- will be added at the same price, prices of current models
- will be dropped)
-
- Currently:
- LCII: 16 MHz 60030, 16 bit data path, built in video RAM,
- 1 PDS slot (16 bit card)
- SI: 20 MHz 60030, 32 bit data path, 1 NuBus slots (32 bit)
- CI: 25 MHz 60030, 32 bit data path, 3 (?) NuBus slots
- special slot for RAM cache card
- Q700: 20 MHz 60040, 32 bit, 1 (?) NuBus slot, built in video
- Q950: 33 MHz 60040, 32 bit, several NuBus slots, built in video
-
- General Mac vs PC stuff:
-
- Advantages:
- MIDI: No card is required, unlike the IBM. All you need is a
- serial port/MIDI adapter, about $50. Mucho shareware avail.
- Video: The LCII and Quadras have built-in video support, 8-bit color on
- a 600x480 monitor, 16-bit on a 512x384. ** They are compatible
- with most VGA and SVGA monitors as well as Mac monitors.
- OS: The Mac operating system has always had great GUI compared
- to the cluged Windows environment. Has some multitasking
- and backgrounding capabilities unlike DOS.
- SW: Tons of useful freeware and shareware available, more than
- for the PC. Real (paid) SW takes advantage of the Mac OS --
- backgrounding, transferring data between applications, etc.
-
- Disadvantages:
- Parallel Centronix printer port: None of the Macintoshes offer
- a parallel port with TTL outputs. This means that some
- PC programs that use TTL outputs can NEVER be ported to Macs.
- Example: Motorola's HC11 assembler/simulator board and program.
- RAM: IBM's have more advanced RAM cache, resulting in faster number
- crunching at the same clock speed. Only noticeable if you are
- running something like AutoCad.
-
- hope this stuff is useful.
