- We have twenty or so Asante ethernet cards of various sorts in various Mac
- models. We've had no problems with these cards, since all the machines are
- able to run the standard System 7 ethernet drivers. I think Asante made an
- excellent engineering decision to go for exact hardware compatibility with
- the Apple cards, since this means I don't have to rely on Asante's own buggy
- software.
-
- HOWEVER, we also have an Asante SCSI ethernet adapter, used to connect a
- PB170 to the network. For this installation I am forced to use Asante's
- software, since the sytem needs to be patched in order to route ethernet
- traffic through the SCSI. This product has locked up the PowerBook at random
- intervals from Day 1, and I had had no luck with the suggestions from Asante
- tech support. Today the PowerBook locked up again, and the user was ready
- have me rip out his network connection. So I decided to try Asante one last
- time, before beginning research on a replacement network interface. To my
- astonishment, the technician immediately offered to send me updated software
- for free, via second-day air freight. He even said that this system lockup
- thing was a "known problem" with the version 1.25 software that we are
- using. We'll see if the update actually _does_ cure the problem, but I
- couldn't reasonably expect more from a company than free replacement
- software, no questions asked.
