-
- This isn't true for the vast majority of applications (including the
- stuff you are doing). Only a few apps (e.g. Adobe Illustrator)
- special case code for Postscript - on most apps, there is no
- difference between the output on a 300 DPI Postscript machine
- versus a 300 DPI QuickDraw machine. Postscript does have some
- advantages, but many of them don't apply to the majority of users:
-
- 1) Document consistency/transportability - it's easier to transfer
- documents formatted for Postscript to service bureaus, etc.
-
- 2) High-end graphics packages - some high-end graphics packages
- provide additional/expanded functionality that only works well on
- Postscript printers.
-
- 3) Offloading the host - most Postscript printers transfer all of the
- rasterization to the printer, which frees up the host quicker. Most
- Quickdraw printers do their rasterization on the host, which may
- keep you from doing additional work until the print job is finished.
- Many cheaper Postscript printers, however, don't have enough
- processing power to render as fast as the host, so many Quickdraw
- printers actually end up being faster than low-end Postscript printers.
- Postscript inherently has additional overhead that Quickdraw
- printers don't have to deal with.
-
- : much prefer to keep it < ~$1500. What printers can give me high
- : quality output in a reasonable time?
- : I'd like to get a feel for how slow the non-PS printers are. Is
- : the Apple LaserWriter LS painfully slow? Is it true that it does
- : not come with a spooler so I could regain control of the Mac while
- : printing?
-
- I personally haven't used a LaserWriter LS, so I can't comment on it.
-
- I know that there are non-Apple products available that come with
- spoolers. There are also third-party spoolers available.
-
- : Any comments and suggestions about any laser printers would be
- : greatly appreciated.
-
- Does it have to be laser? If so, why? If not - check out the HP
- DeskWriter (lots of bias, of course) 300DPI (with spooler) at alot
- less than your minimum - and color for not much more.
