- Okay, here are the results of my Quadra 700 price poll:
-
- First off, some schools include sales tax (or don't have any) and some do
- not. Check with your institution, as 5% (or more) of $4500 is a fair
- amount of money. The prices I give below are, to the best of my knowledge,
- *including* tax.
-
- The prices on the 4/230 configuration range from $4425 to $4819 at various
- universities. A "normal" price seems to be $4500-4600.
-
- The prices on the 4/0 (i.e. no hard drive) configuration range from
- $3470 to $3670. However, people report that you can pick up a good 230MB
- internal drive for $600-$700, so that looks like the way to go.
-
- If you're at Harvard, by the way, be wary. Their price system is very
- screwed up (as I found out last year when pricing LC's). The Harvard price
- for a 4/0 system is $4164 + 5% tax!!. For no apparent reason, the 4/230
- costs only $4749+tax. This may be true at other schools too, so watch for
- price glitches like this...
-
- I also checked out ComputerTown, a major computer store in NH (where there's
- no sales tax). Their quoted prices were $3997 for the 4/0, and $5297 for
- the 4/230, although without being asked the salesman told me that I was
- better off getting a third party drive. These prices are probably at the
- low end of the (reputable) commercial dealer prices.
-
- Thanks to everyone who responded.
